Our History
The Velveeta® brand has a long and rich history dating all the way back to 1918 when it was first invented by Swiss cheese maker Emil Frey. Frey was working for the Monroe Cheese Company in New York when he developed a revolutionary new type of cheese product that blended different cheeses together to create a smooth, creamy texture and meltability. This innovative cheese product was given the name Velveeta and was launched across the United States in 1923.
Over the years, Velveeta® became known for its unique melting properties and smooth texture, making it the perfect base for dips, sauces, sandwiches, casseroles and more cheesy recipes. In 1932, Velveeta added another important capability – the ability to be sliced – by reformulating to a firmer consistency while maintaining creaminess and meltability. This allowed for neat, sliceable squares and rectangles ideal for grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese boards.
In the 1950s, Velveeta launched its first major advertising campaign focused on the theme ‘Velveeta melts smoothly every time’. Throughout the decade, Velveeta® was advertised as the ideal cheese for cooking because it delivered perfect melt and stretch every time. This messaging highlighted the brand’s point of difference compared to natural cheeses that can separate or get stringy when melted.
In 1964, Kraft purchased Velveeta from the Monroe Cheese Company, merging two of America’s most iconic food brands.
